Breast Cancer Prevention & Early Detection: What Every Woman Over 40 Should Know!
As women over 40, many of us become more proactive about our health. One topic that deserves special attention is breast cancer. It’s a concern that touches many lives—including mine—but the good news is, early detection and prevention can make a life-saving difference.
In this post, we'll explore why breast cancer prevention matters, the importance of mammograms, how new AI technology is revolutionizing early detection, and why it’s time to take charge of your breast health.
Breast Cancer: The Facts You Need to Know
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States (excluding skin cancers). According to the American Cancer Society, here are some key statistics for 2024:
🔹 About 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women this year.
🔹 About 42,250 women are expected to die from breast cancer.
🔹 1 in 8 women (about 13%) will develop invasive breast cancer throughout their lifetime.
🔹 The risk increases with age, especially after 40.

But there’s hope: When breast cancer is detected early and in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%.
My Wake-Up Call
I still remember the day one of my sisters called me with her diagnosis. She was in her 40s and dealing with several health issues. But like many of us, life has gotten busy. She skipped her mammogram several years in a row. When she finally went, they found a malignant tumor on her breast. Thankfully, it was caught early. She made an informed decision, and a mastectomy was performed. Although my sister recently passed from a different condition, having a mammogram at the time and making the hard decision of having a mastectomy and chemotherapy, she had over 15 more years to see her boys grow up.
My sister’s experience was a wake-up call for me. I scheduled my mammogram and encouraged the women in my circle to do the same. It was a powerful reminder that early action saves lives.
Prevention: What You Can Do Today
While we can’t control everything, we can make choices that lower our risk:
✅ Maintain a healthy weight
✅ Stay physically active—at least 150 minutes a week
✅ Limit alcohol—no more than one drink per day
✅ Eat an anti-inflammatory, nutrient-rich diet (hello, leafy greens, berries, and omega-3s!)
✅ Avoid smoking
✅ Manage chronic stress through meditation, breathwork, or gentle movement
✅ Get regular screenings

Why Mammograms Matter After 40
For women over 40, annual or biennial mammograms are one of the most effective ways to catch breast cancer early—sometimes before a lump can even be felt.
Mammograms use low-dose X-rays to find abnormal growths or changes in breast tissue. Early detection increases the chance of less invasive treatment and better outcomes.
When should you start?
Women at average risk: typically at 40 to 50 years old
Women at higher risk (family history or genetic factors): possibly earlier—ask your doctor.

The Future is Now: How AI is Transforming Breast Cancer Detection
Here’s something I learned while getting my mammogram done: AI (Artificial Intelligence) has entered the mammogram space.
🔬 While making my appointment, I was advised of a new AI technology used to help detect breast cancer. It’s called Personalized Breast Cancer Detection (PBCD). AI-powered tools help radiologists detect breast cancers earlier and more accurately. They can find patterns and subtle signs that the human eye may miss, reducing false negatives and false positives. I chose to add it to my services for an extra charge, since is not covered by my insurance.
👉 A 2023 study in The Lancet Oncology found that AI-assisted mammograms matched or outperformed traditional methods in detecting cancers—and did so with fewer unnecessary callbacks.
👉 AI also helps prioritize patients needing urgent follow-up, streamlining care.

More and more hospitals are adopting AI into their breast cancer screening programs. While AI doesn’t replace expert radiologists, it gives them a powerful tool to save more lives.
